Perched high in the hills behind Sciacca, Caltabellotta can be seen for miles.
The drive there is beautiful with spring flowers covering the fields.
As we climb higher and higher, the road becomes a series of never ending bends.
The hill top towns provide their own challenge. We have learnt not to trust our tomtom who likes to take shortcuts, but to follow the signs to the centre of the village. Shortcuts are not advised in Caltabellotta!
We have come here for lunch at M.A.T.E.S
No, not Mates Restaurant but the Museo delle Antiche Traditizioni Enogastranomiche Siciliane.
A family restaurant with Mamma in the kitchen and the sons running the front of house. When we were there, Papa made an appearance to check the day’s takings.
The restaurant is also home to their collection of antique cooking implements.
Open for 8 years, they are proud of their traditional cooking.
The family trattoria is alive and well!
